Hi, I’m Sheila, a technology consultant, web designer, project manager and author. I help heart-centered business owners, the lightworkers of the world, with technology. I build websites and make technology work for them, so they can spend more time focusing on growing their business and doing what they love.

Introduction

I’ve been building and fixing websites for clients for the past several years on all three of these platforms as well as WordPress.  This article is going to focus on Wix, Weebly and Squarespace as they are excellent platforms for anyone getting started with a web presence or wanting to improve their web presence.

What about WordPress?

While you are probably wondering why I’m excluding WordPress here, it’s not that there is anything wrong with it.  It’s just a platform that I only recommend if someone has needs for plugins and functionality beyond what one of the other platforms will handle.  Wordpress is amazing and I’ve worked on more WordPress sites than any other.  It’s an incredible platform with unending functionality.  The unending functionality is the reason I’m not including it here.  Wordpress is a platform you have to manage.

WordPress is great for those who:

  • Want to get geeky and be technical
  • Are willing to invest the ongoing time and money into just maintaining the backend needs for security and backups
  • Want ultimate flexibility in all aspects of a website

Benefits of Inclusive Platforms like Wix, Weebly & Squarespace

Wix, Weebly & Squarespace are wonderful platforms that allow you to focus on your business and not the technical support of a WordPress site.  All three have great page builders for easy drag and drop creation of sites.  With any of them, you don’t have to worry about security or software updates or caching or CDN’s because they all manage that for you.  While there is a monthly fee, just think of the monthly fee as supporting the platform and all the work you don’t have to.

They also all allow you to build a site quickly and easily with templates to start.  You can have a site up and running in hours if you have the content, graphics and photos you want to use.

Use Wix if you want ultimate Design Flexibility

Wix is wonderful if you want ultimate design flexibility.  With the page builder in Wix, you can move things EXACTLY where you want them.  This is it’s strength and also it’s weakness as you are responsible for making sure that your text lines up in the same place on each page.  If you have used page layout tools like Visio or graphics tools where you are used to laying things out how you want, then Wix is for you.

They have a shopping cart and newsletter platform, although I’m a fan of Mailerlite if you want to do newsletters and build your mailing list.

Use Weebly if you want true Simplicity

Weebly is the simplest environment to edit a website in. It’s the perfect tool for DIYers who want to do their own site, but don’t want to be really technical. There are some apps that allow extension of the site functionality for things like testimonials and maps. The page builder is straightforward and easy to use.

They do have a shopping cart and newsletter platform. Again, my recommendation is always to keep your mailing list in Mailerlite or some other email marketing platform so that you can have all the functionality of a modern email marketing tool.

Use Squarespace if you want Modern Beautiful sites

Squarespace has brilliant beautiful templates to start and modern functionality in their site layouts and graphics. It’s hard to make a Squarespace site look bad. There are many people who have become experts in CSS which allows you to style a Squarespace site almost any way that you want. There are also many plugins that clever people have built to work within Squarespace.

They too have a shopping cart platform as well as having recently announced sending email from within Squarespace. You’ll get more functionality with a tool like Mailerlite, so just use that for your newsletters. While Squarespace does integrate nicely with Mailchimp, you will quickly run into issues when you try to deliver something more than the initial optin as Squarespace doesn’t allow you to select groups within Mailchimp.

My Favorite Platform

I always start with Squarespace in mind when I’m first talking with a client. If through that conversation, I discover that they need functionality that is better suited for Weebly or Wix, then I’ll recommend that. I enjoy working with all 3 platforms and at the same time, Squarespace is the most fun.

Plus, my clients receive 20% off of their first year when signing up for an annual plan with Squarespace. I receive an affiliate bonus with Wix and Weebly, yet I’m always happy for my client to get the discount with Squarespace.

Video of Pro’s and Con’s of Wix, Weebly and Squarespace

I always try to show people what things look like so that you truly have a sense of what works and what doesn’t. Sometimes getting a sense of how it feels for you helps you make the right choice.

In the video, I show each platform and the page builder environment while talking about the pro’s and con’s of each tool.
