Hi, I’m Sheila, a technology consultant, web designer, project manager and author. I help heart-centered business owners, the lightworkers of the world, with technology. I build websites and make technology work for them, so they can spend more time focusing on growing their business and doing what they love.
If you do any searching on the web using Google, I’m sure you’ve noticed those really cool links under some sites and not others. It feels like such a treat when they start coming up on your site or a site you are searching for. The idea behind the links is to provide quick access to information that Google believes would be most helpful. And there is the key…. You can’t set these or program them. They are identified based on what Google thinks is most helpful. Google refers to them as Site Links.

What You Can Do

While you can not control what they are or set them yourself, there are things that you can do to get them to show up.  There is never a guarantee, yet having done these on my own site since January, I’m now getting what looks like the ‘mini’ version of Site links.
Here are some things that I’ve done that have helped to get to having some mini links.  From my research, they are what will get you the full version over time.
  • Register your site with Google Search Console and submit your sitemap.   Read more about Getting Visible.
  • Repeat key menu items from your main menu in your footer and a secondary footer menu.
  • Publish content on your blog weekly so that you are raising the credibility of your site.
  • Create crosslinks around your site as much as possible.  Ie, in your blog posts, link to other blog posts or to your services or to your about page so that they links are more prevalent in your site.
  • Have a well organized site as far as your content and structure goes so that it is consistent with best practices and how people are used to finding information.  Ie, keep your ‘About’ page called ‘About’ and not ‘Meet Me’.
Here are a few articles with more in depth information on setting them:

How Long Will it Take?

Like many good things in life, it might take a while.  My mother always said that ‘patience was a virtue.’  She was so right.  I had pretty much let of the thought that my small site doing what so many were doing would have site links.  It was quite fun to see that they are appearing, even after only 6 months of consistent blog posting and site structure!  Yes, patience is challenging, but it always provides results in the end.  Don’t expect them to show up overnight.  Allow the google search world to discover who you are and what you do and see what appears.  It’s a bit like solving a mystery!
Does your site show up with site links?  Try searching with your business name and your name and see what shows up.  When you do that, it will typically bring you to the top of the search results and you can see what shows up for you.  I would love to hear about it!
